Originally, I had planned to take a zero day at Fontana Village. My friend, Gene, was going to meet me there, and we would spend the day enjoying the ammenities at the village. Fontana Village is somewhere in between a town and a campground. They have a lodge, cabins, campsites, a mini golf course, a pool, a water park, fire pits, a pavillion for live music, a laundrymat, an ice cream store, a post office, and a general store. What better place to take zero day?
As it turns out, my hiking pace did not work out with Gene's work schedule and we decided on Gatlinberg as a place to meet. And as for Fontana Village? Well, we arrived there on April 16th....during the off season. The full fledged season begins May 1st. So the pool? No water. The ice cream parlor? Closed. The mini golf? Empty. No water park, no fire pits, no live bands.
The restaurant was delicious, though.
So as it turns out, we ended up just staying the night and getting back on the trail the next day. But, take a look at the pictures. Can't you just imaging how great it would be in Fontana Village when the season is up and running?
